The Next HOPE
Sleepy.. so sleepy. But I had fun. Thursday: Leia stayed at home to watch over my mother, sacrificing her time at HOPE. It took about an hour -ish to set up my table (silver buildings, clouds, a triangle that said 'HOPE' and a zeppelin hanging above..) and then I got to run around and help others with errands. RenderMan and Cableflame exhaled into zeppelins. Render also had to clean some of the banners before they could be hung. Some awesome people stepped up and helped him during the actual hanging part. I even got to help a tiny bit. (Really tiny.. I mostly just took pictures) Eventually the stuff behind the speakers was hung.. and I got to see my pillow somewhere after 3AM. At least I was able to get a nap in, before HOPE officially started. Friday: Went to Dragorn and Render's talk. The security staffer there was very nice and extremely helpful when I was trying to find a seat and later a seat for Render as well as we stayed for Dan Kaminsky's keynote. C4bl3Fl4m3 rocked some awesome eyeliner (I have photographic evidence: C4bl3Fl4m3). Johnny 5 came into Manhattan and took a tour of the con-space. It was a real treat for him to stop by. Throughout the evening I was offered alcoholic beverages often, but declined due to being worried that it might not be the best idea to drink the day before I had to be on stage. I went to bed some time past midnight, but not too late. Saturday: I woke up scared out of my mind. Really.. I was wishing I had not signed up to be on a panel and having horrible daydreams that involved fainting on stage, forgetting how to speak English and things much, much worse. I tried to distract myself for at least the first half of the day. Cableflame and I noticed we were too late for the 4th track Time Travel talks. I took some photos of the Empire State Building. Got to hang out with Mouse for over 30 seconds. (Took the time to take photos of her with Render, and then her with myself). Second half of the day was spent panicking that I could not find RTF and wanted to iron out some stuff for the panel with him and Gonzo. Gonzo took the time to give me really brilliant advice regarding speaking on a panel, but I was still scared. Render was busy working on making his jacket more awesome. However, once it was time for the panel (it was delayed, thus it started at 11PM) I was able to breathe.. but just barely. I did my best to follow Gonzo's advice (but you can still see me fidgeting a lot on the DVD video) and bernieS joined the panel which was fabulous. (I took a photo from the stage) In the end.. I survived and did not faint. I am proud of myself for facing my fear, but I am still scared of the stage. Render donned his blinky coat and attention shifted to him and I got to blend into the scenery once more.. which was nice. Went out to eat. NYers loved Ren's jacket. He rode on a Segway with it, and a helmet for safety. I was able to get my traditional photo with Cheshire in, thus keeping the tradition alive. I went to bed very late, but was in such a euphoric state knowing the panel was behind me and I could most likely dodge the stage on Sunday. Sometime during the day, Render was working on his jacket and I walked away to meander. I saw one guy intensely searching his surroundings. I learned his son dropped a small piece and that it seemed to be gone forever. Without it, they could not work on the kit they purchased. Render did not have any on him. I went to the http://www.adafruit.com/ table and explained the situation. Immediately they pillaged another kit for the part and I was able to bring it over to the father and son. The father tells his son, (paraphrased)'This nice lady brought you another part. What do you say?' and this little boy looked up at me and said, 'Thank you.' I thought it was the sweetest thing ever. All it took was a few moments to try to find a spare.. and with some help, that little boy was learning how to put together a kit. Such an awesome example of why more people show go to conferences and bring their kids. Sunday: Woke up a bit late. But, there was a dinosaur hanging from the zeppelin above the table I worked on. I thought it was so funny, I took photos. I figured since it was the last day.. and funny.. the dinosaur did not have to be taken down. There was bacon on the mezzanine level. I did not eat any, but it smelled wonderful. Jolly gave me a nutrition lesson and really inspired me to keep trying to improve my health. Mouse was on a panel, so I took a couple of photos of her. The Zeppelins did not deflate too much, which made me very happy. During closing ceremonies, I did not join the rest of the staff because I was trying to avoid the stage at all costs. RTF mentioned me and made me stand up. I, being too spooked at the time, did not think to turn around from the front row to face the audience. I just stood, did a weak curtsey and then did my best to hide in my chair after that. Cleanup was quite the frenzy. But, I rescued the dinosaur from being thrown out, Render saved the triangle with HOPE on it. I saw the fellow that took care of the garbage all weekend long and thanked him. He did a great job. Our room keys seemed to hate us. We had to queue up a few times to get the keys redone.. but Render and I stayed for another night just to sleep off the lack of sleep from HOPE. With the help of orange juice, we hoped to keep Con Plague away. Monday: Returned to Long Island. My mother had Leia on display so I could see the bunny as soon as I was back.
